The question of how safe it is for your baby to sleep in your bed with you has been debated for years. Those who are for having the baby in the bed claim it’s not only safe, but offers psychological benefits to both the baby and parents. The other side points out that having your baby sleep with you is dangerous.

Rather than continue this argument, it is just safe to give tips on what ways it is safe for babies to sleep in their parent’s bed. One of the big issues is the fear of accidental death by suffocation, or crushing the child. There are some simple solutions to these problems.

One simple solution is to get a bigger bed, preferably a queen or king sized so there is plenty of room. It is safe for babies to sleep in bed with you but, there are some things to watch out for. Avoid having the child sleep between you and your partner, put her on the side, with a barrier of some kind to prevent falling off.

In most cases, it is not only safe for babies to sleep with their parents, but there are some benefits in doing so. If you are breast-feeding, it is easier to feed the child, and you won’t disturb your partner by getting up.

Another option that provides all the benefits of your baby sleeping with you is to use a sleeping basket. Set the basket next to the bed. This makes it simple to hold your baby until she falls off to sleep. Then transfer her to the basket. When the baby wakes up during the night, you can stay in bed and take care of her needs.

If your baby has health problems, it may be a good idea to have her sleep with you, or at the very least by you. The chances of a problem are much slimmer if you are within ear shot and arms reach.

There are times that it is not safe for your baby to sleep in your bed. If you are ill, you can easily infect your baby. Consuming alcohol or sedatives also makes it unsafe for your baby. Illness or alcohol makes your senses “dull”, and this will make it more difficult to recognize a problem.

Using common sense will be the determining factor when deciding if it safe for babies to sleep with their parents. If parent’s sleeping routines are altered in anyway, stress, exhaustion or the like, these factors could effect the safety of your baby. If in doubt, use the crib.

How long should I let my baby sleep in my bedroom before letting her sleep in her own nursery?
I have a 6 week old daughter that sleeps in her bassinet in our bedroom, how long should I let her sleep in our room? She has a fully finished nursery and my fiance wants her to sleep in her crib NOW. She sleeps an average of 6-7 hours a night, but I still feel more comfortable with her in our room. How long did you let your babies sleep in the same room as you?

The longer the better since studies how that their is a decrease in SIDS with babies who sleep in their parents rooms. Nothing wrong with having her close. My son is 9 months old and still sleeps in our room.

The idea behind this is that it produces soft background noise that is similar to what the baby experiences in the mothers womb thus promoting sleep, a cheaper alternative to this could be simply the old fashioned soft music mobile over the baby’s crib.  A baby swing or baby rocker is a really good sleeping aid that simply slowly rocks the baby in a side to side motion that imitates a mothers sway, the baby can be put in this while the parent can get ready for bed and usually the baby will be asleep within minutes.

Often, it seems fairly random whether or not babies sleep well. New parents will often discuss how they were simply “lucky” with one child as opposed to another. While it is true that in many cases how your child sleeps is largely out of your control, there remains many baby sleep tips you can employ to encourage better sleeping habits. One of the most important is to ensure that your baby is comfortable when he goes to sleep.

Bedtime is a transitional period for your child, and your efforts to make him sleep better should revolve around getting him to learn to sleep on his own. One of the most important elements of achieving this is to create an environment where your baby is as comfortable as possible. For this reason, the before-bed routine should always consist of changing and feedings – the worst thing for a baby, in terms of sleeping well, is to be in want of something when he is put to bed.

You should also be trying to make your baby as physically comfortable as possible when putting him to sleep. One of the most commonly overlooked aspects of this is allowing your baby to breathe easily through the nose. Most people, but especially babies, depend on clear nasal passages for a good night’s sleep. It’s important to remove all airborne allergens in the baby’s nursery: everything should be well dusted, and you should keep dust collecting items – like fuzzy blankets and stuffed animals – to a minimum. When your baby is very young it takes time for him to learn to breathe through his mouth, so you must carefully pay attention to his nasal breathing when putting him to sleep. If you notice the problem is persistent, you may benefit from installing an air filter in the room that is designed to remove dust particles and allergens – this also has the added bonus of creating a soothing hum that will help many babies sleep better.

You should also pay particular attention to your baby’s clothing. All babies are different in terms of their preferences, and you have to watch them closely. In many cases, things that look comfortable to you – very snug outfits, for example – may not be comfortable for your particular baby. Try both tight and loose fitting clothes and see which ones your baby seems to prefer.

Finally, consider how well your baby sleeps with wet diapers. Most babies will sleep well through the night with a wet diaper, but some will not. If this is the case, you can often solve your baby’s sleeping difficulties by giving him a change in the night.

The main thing to keep in mind in terms of your babies comfort is to pay close attention, and to trust your instincts. Although it is tempting to follow guides and stick to hard and fast rules, remember that the adage “mother knows best” is generally true. So if your baby seems uncomfortable in his clothes, don’t hesitate to change him into something that doesn’t “look” as comfortable. If you trust your own judgments over those of guides in terms of your baby’s comfort, it’s likely that he will sleep much better.
