Mrs. Hussin has some very practical ways for helping an infant sleep through the night. However, this book is very POORLY written. I have 20 years of experience working with parents and children in various capacities. This book is so NEGATIVE toward parents who have not done it “right.” Yes, the “easy way out” (nursing and/or rocking baby to sleep) is not always the best. However, Mrs. Hussin has an uncanny ability to “diss” parents who have made mistakes. For example, “Even if you are not a complete ‘Debbie,’ make sure you don’t allow yourself to become any part of her either” (p. 53). How rude! Another HUGE issue is that Mrs. Hussin downplays postpartum depression. She states, “…except for cases of postpartum depression, which is not as frequent as supposed…” (p. 11). I am not sure where she gets this information (there are no references to any scientific research). The research I have read says it is actually more prevalent than supposed. If you make comments like that you MUST cite research (unless you come up with idea totally void of all human influence). Lastly, this book is written in poor English - a few of the sentences don’t even make sense. Just read this book with caution!

In my read-through of Ms. Hussin’s book, I can see how implementing her techniques of sleep separation, etc could be useful in getting a newborn quickly accustomed to sleeping independently. However, the title and summary passage make it seem like hers is a method that can be painlessly applied to older infants as well. Unfortunately, when you get to the chapter on older children, her plan devolves into straight forward Ferber, along the lines of “you must come to terms with the fact that your child will cry, but this won’t make you a bad parent…”. While this may be true for many of us who have waited until our children are a few months old before tackling their sleep habits (or lack thereof), the book’s title leads you down a rosy path before dropping the harsh truth at your feet.

First off, if you are not into any sort of “cry it out” method, then this book is not for you.
Now, onto the review… =)
I’m a new mom and have already bought and read through a TON of books on sleeping. I am in the middle of sleep training my own daughter using the Ferber Method.
After reading the reviews, I thought I’d give this book a try. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment. The author is basically implementing the Ferber Method, but referring to it as the Sleep Baby Sleep technique. The book is just filled with basic knowledge and didn’t teach me anything new. All the information in this book can be found in other better books that are research-based.
Obviously, if you are interested in this book, then you are interested in some sort of “cry it out” method (because that is what this books advocates). But rather than buy this book, I’d buy Solving Your Child’s Sleep Problems by Ferber, Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy Child by Weissbluth, and Sleeping Through the Night by Mindell. These three all discuss the same sleep training as this book does, but these books are better because they are research-based, more detailed, and have a lot more information on specific sleep problems/scenarios. I own all 3 of these books (and a few others) and these are the ones I refer to time and time again.

I almost didn’t buy this book because of one of the reviews that said that the author was judgmental. So I had to write my own review to let readers know that I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that the author is judgmental. On the contrary, the author was kind, nurturing, and extremely helpful. I have read several baby sleep books and found this one to have the most practical and logical approach. The author helped me realize the bad habits that I had gotten into with my baby and offered great solutions to un-do my problems. I can tell already that it won’t take long at all with implementing her approach to get my baby taking regular naps and FINALLY sleeping through the night. Kudos to you author, and to all you new moms out there — this book is for you if you want your baby sleeping better!
