The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program: Follow Your Child’s Natural Sleep Rhythms for Better Nights and Naps
Product Description
For every parent who struggles with their baby’s sleep (and for every parent who wishes their toddler had better sleep habits), finally a straightforward, all-natural solution to help baby get the sleep she needs—both through the night and during the day.
A sleep researcher with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, Dr. Polly Moore has created a simple, foolproof method based on the basic human rest and activity cycle (BRAC), which occurs every hour and a half. According to the BRAC, baby should go back for a nap a mere 90 minutes after waking up—that’s right: 90 minutes.
The program is called N.A.P.S.—Note time when baby wakes up, Add 90 minutes, Play, feed, or pursue other activities, then, at the end of the 90 minutes, Soothe baby back to sleep. When baby wakes up again, whether after a short or a long nap, start the cycle over. And, although it sounds counterintuitive, frequent napping actually helps baby sleep through the night.
In a reassuring and accessible style, Dr. Moore explains how and why the program works; the benefits of napping—a happier, healthier baby with a headstart on cognitive development and emotional intelligence; how to implement it for babies at various ages, from two weeks to a year; and how to use it to solve common sleep programs, such as a baby’s need to be held, baby waking up too early in the morning, baby getting a second wind before bedtime, baby confusing day and night, and more. The Wire-O-bound book includes a guided journal for recording baby’s sleepy signals and sleep difficulties, a daily log for keeping track of baby’s nap times, and space to note baby’s milestones—all peppered with humorous, inspirational quotes.

I purchased this for my granddaughter who was having problems with her newborn’s sleeping habits. It helped somewhat, so for that she was very grateful.

The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program: Follow Your Child’s Natural Sleep Rhythms for Better Nights and Naps
I bought this book because all of the previous reviewers gave it 5 stars and I read it cover-to-cover as soon as I got it. I had already started a sleep log for my 6-month-old son. After accumulating 2 weeks worth of data, I looked at the between sleep intervals and found that he does not run on 90-minute cycles. He’s just as likely to go to sleep 135 or 205 minutes after he wakes than he is to go to sleep 90 or 180 minutes after waking. I wonder if the previous reviewers looked at their babies between sleep intervals before writing their glowing reviews?
The 90 minute plan may work really well for younger babies. I remember back when my son would wake up, eat (50-60 minutes), get a diaper change (5 minutes), be alert (20-30 minutes), and then go back to sleep until the next time he was hungry. He didn’t have any problems sleeping back then, though, and I didn’t need a book to tell me when he was ready to go to sleep.
I’m not convinced that the 90-minute cycle exists (at least not in 6-month-old babies) and I didn’t learn anything else from this book that I hadn’t already read online (for free).

The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program: Follow Your Child’s Natural Sleep Rhythms for Better Nights and Naps
This book has a good point: watch your baby’s natural rhythms to see when is the best time for them to nap, rather than setting pre-determined nap time. It also points out the recommended amount of sleep for a baby. This is also good.
However, the grand plan for getting your baby to sleep at night is not much better than letting them cry to sleep. The book suggests you put your sleepy but still awake baby in her crib, then try to sooth her til she falls asleep. If she gets really fussy, let her fuss for 15 minutes, then pick her up and soothe her, then put then her back in crib. If she gets fussy again, just repeat the previous steps. This is ridiculous and does not work. Maybe some babies get tired out by fussing and eventually fall asleep, but this is not my experience. All this advice is just letting your baby cry it out in 15 minute increments with intermittent comforting and the difference between this and the standard cry it out? You are in the room with your baby the whole time. We tried this for 1 month. Now we have ordered No-Cry Sleep Solution and see how that goes.

The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program: Follow Your Child’s Natural Sleep Rhythms for Better Nights and Naps
Yes, my baby was on a 90 minute cycle until she was about three months old. I recognized that before I read the book. I discovered and bought this book when she was four months old. At that time, she had begun waking up every hour or two at night and only sleeping 30-45 minutes for naps. She was generally cranky and tired all the time. I read the book and tried to stick to 90 minutes or 180 minutes, but it just didn’t work for my baby. She did not usually show signs of sleepiness at 90 minutes, but if I tried to put her to sleep anyway, she just wouldn’t go to sleep. If I tried to wait 180 minutes, she was too tired and ready to go to sleep sooner than that. Her sleep cycle was more like two to two and half hours which based on this book should not be the case. After logging her sleep for three weeks, I know that two hours worked for her. She is now five months old and we still have the same problem with frequent wakings and short naps, but this book was a complete waste of money for us. Other than the theory of the 90 minute cycle, there is absolutely no information in this book that I didn’t already know from reading about sleep on the Internet. I’m happy for all the people that gave it such great reviews, I really wish it could have worked for us too.

The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program: Follow Your Child’s Natural Sleep Rhythms for Better Nights and Naps
I bought this book when my son was about 1 month old. It was such a breakthrough for me. I found that the 90 minute theory was so true of my son. He would actually start showing signs of sleepiness at around 75-80 minutes after waking. All I had to do was hold him & pat him & he’d be asleep at almost exactly 90 minutes after waking. One thing I found very impressive was Polly Moore’s website ([...]). You can ask her any questions you may have & she will personally answer your questions via e-mail. I still can’t get my son to fall asleep on his own but it is extremely helpful to know about the 90 minute cycle so I can anticipate his need for sleep before he gets overtired & overly fussy.
